crazy max!

Alright, I've had this problem for about a few weeks, and it's driving me insane. For whatever reason, my UVW Editor window menu gets all crazy. I've tried restarting, deleting the modifier and reapplying, but nothing works. It does occasionaly switch back to normal, but then it stops working again.

Here's a screenshot of the problem. All the menus are like this.

By the way, this is Max 8

are you loading up custom ui presets from previous versions of max?

Nope. Just MaxDark.

That's really weird. Try loading the Default.mnu file in Customize UI when it disappears and see if that fixes it.

I had a similar issue at work yesterday- had to shut down max and start up again- also lots of random crashes too, even when it's idling in the background..... grrrr

Max sure is crazy... I get this (and some of my co-works) fairly often. If you just throw on another unwrap then it usually "fixes" itself. Try that out, you shouldn't need to restart max, or anything else.

Brian Miller: Thanks. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be working. I've tried deleting the modifier, reapplying, restarting, and every combination possible. Nothing seems to shake it.

I've only had this problem on this install (recently formatted my drive, so I had to reinstall everything) I may try reinstalling Max tonight. Hopefully that will 'fix' it. I'd really like to find out what is actually happening though, so a proper fix can be arranged.

I've also had this happen on my work computer. I seem to remember that I was in some weird sub-object mode or I applied the modifier to a sub-object (I apply to elements a lot) rather than the object as a whole.

I didn't need to restart or anything like that. /shrug

i'm one of brian millers co workers, and i get that when i put on a unwrap, and then go into the menus before i move anything in the window.. if it happens, if i just close the window and reopen it, it works fine

Weird! So I seem to have found out how to fix it, thanks to Rhinokey.

During this problem, if you close the window out and click on the modifier in the stack, it'll bring up the edit window again. Doing this, you still have that weird menu problem.

BUT if you close it and hit the Edit button before clicking anywhere else in the stack, the Edit window will come up and work just fine.

Very interesting problem. I'm glad I've figured it out at least to a managable extent. Thanks guys!

I'm still not quite understanding how this happens, I've never seen it before myself. But if you can list out the steps to reproduce it, I can see if it still happens in Max 9. And if it does, I'll send in a bug report to get it fixed.

its pretty random for me,, most of the time if i aply an unwrap, then go straight into the tools menu to open up the relax or render template thing,, they will be empty.
