guitar maintenance question

the neck on my guitar is twisted slightly, looking down the neck from the headstock the 6th string is tilted up higher than the 1st string. is this normal and i just haven't noticed before or is it twisted? if so how do i fix it? adjusting the truss rod (something i haven't messed with before)?

sounds like the action on that one string is a bit high, what guitar is it.

Unless you know what you are doing don't mess with the rod.

What do you mean by tilted up? The string is higher off the fretboard? Elec. or acustic?

The action is dictated by the nut. It may just need adjusting.

the action isnt dictated by the nut on most guitars, if its a strat style bridge the saddles could just be really high up.

Oooo that don't look good. Is the action on the 1st string much higher than the 6 at the 1st fret?

The rod affects the 'bowing' of the neck. So I doubt it would help this twist you got.

Maybe you better sell that one.

How much of a problem is this while playing?
Are you getting any fret buzz?

Neck is warped. Has the guitar ever been stored in a damp place for a prolonged period? Have you had it for long, and did you buy it new?
It should still be playable but you'll likely get unavoidable fret buzz now.

Oh noes! I had a Jackson Kelly Pro like that. Was twisted slightly, and I could never get the thing in perfect tuning. Intonation was always off on the high notes. I never knew if there was anything to do to repair it.

[/ QUOTE ]Replacing the neck would have been an option because you can't straighen duff one out once they've gone. Although the practicalities of that depend on the costs involved!

I'd have to second what MoP said, where have you been storing the guitar as it's *very* unusual for that to happen on it's own.

if you're going to replace the set neck on an epiphone it would be cheaper to just buy a new one.

i have my guitar on a stand next to an air conditioning vent in the floor. it's been sitting there for around 3 years. it's only recently that i've noticed the twisting. though you're probably right and that is what is warping the neck.

it's not been interfering with my (attemtpted) playing. no fret buzzing, stays tuned. intonation i'm not so sure about because i don't really know much about it. tune it open, then 12th fret, then natural harmonic at the 12th fret right?

[/ QUOTE ]That's what's done it then. They do need to be kept in a 'neutral' as possible environment; moisture of any kind and constant uneven temperature changes are killers for the woodwork (acoustic guitars even more so).

In all seriousness, if its not bothering you, don't try and fix it. Wait till it gives you a problem, then buy a new one, or take up the piano. Buy a PA, probably a pair of RCF's, a pair of SM58's, a 4 channel mixer, Berhinger of corse, and a Baldwin baby grand and you too can be cool. Like me. And Ben Folds.

Piano rocks.
