Throw out? Um, ever heard of upgrading? The left overs can be used to cobble together a fileserver or something.

Well but a new computer means you rebuy things like the harddrive, peripherials, any separate soundcards you may have and the OS. The only things I change during an upgrade are Mobo, RAM, CPU and graphics card (actually I upgrade the graphics card and the rest in alternating cycles...), the rest can stay where it is.

Of course my main comp owns, but I got some real gems layin around. And by gems, I mean pieces of shit. You can't roll with my 66mhz Macs I have setup in my closet, or my 5 133mhz compaqs that I have for no reason. I also have a kickass dual 733mhz P3 server with 1.5 gigs of registered SDRAM

Pfft. I've got a 7kg 386 "laptop" with a 640x400 2-bit LED screen (powered by EGA! Woot!) lying around. Its only real use is ripping C64 diskettes to image files since you can't do that with a multitasking OS.

I've still got this baby lying around somewhere:

    kaypro.jpg

Took one boot disk to load up the OS and had another bay to actually save to.

There's still an in-use win3.1/dos 6 combo, 486 back at my parents place. I think it was able to play Myst, although it needed a bootdisk for that. My folks don't want to trash it because it's got a big database of workstuff on it and they don't know how to get it off...the "mass storage backup tape drive" died out a decade ago....

What, TWO disk drives? And by the looks of it 3.5"? Whoa, you've got it good. My C64 has a 5.25" drive and that's high-end for that system, many people only got a tape deck.

My folks don't want to trash it because it's got a big database of workstuff on it and they don't know how to get it off...

Plug HDD into the IDE bus of another system?

blankslatejoe: Thats a Kaypro isnt it? I had one of those back in the day! I had a first person 3d Packman game drawn with Vectors (like the old star wars games) that was fun.

Just looked at the image name, and it is indeed a Kaypro. How rad.

amazing that the shite old amstrad there above is only 2 keys different from a modern keyboard.

    some things never change eh?

would love to get a dvorak keyboard one day. However the Japanese keyboard is really Coding/internet friendly. no shift for @ / ; : - but finding the ' key and backslash (¥ on a japanese one) key were a night mare, considering that ' is one of the regular english keys.

shite but it survived being used in the sahara desert where i lived as a kid, not many modern pcs would stand that, esp all the power cuts/surges.

I've built a dvorak keyboard myself by popping out the keys on a regular US keyboard and putting them back in a different order.

amiga. in it's time a winner indeed but i thought it was only a hit in continental europe and you brits were using those acorn archimedes things instead? is that your setup, hawken? seems fairly recent - sony trinitron and some plextor cd-drive. the cables all over the place give it a nerdy flair.

the red joystick beside the schneider cpc - is that the grip-shaped one? quickshot or whatever? my hand suddenly started to hurt ... again wink.gif

back on subject, and thinking about upgrading, is replacing motherboard cpu etc hard, ive only ever done stuff like graphics cards, dvd writters and harddrives.

    im tempted by this

    AMD Athlon™ 64 X2-3800+ Dual Core
    with HyperTransport™ Technology
    Genuine Windows® XP Home
    ASUS A8N-SLI Mainboard
    1024MB DDR400 Memory
    160GB Serial ATA Hard Drive
    512MB GeForce 7300GS SLI Ready
    Sony 16x DVD ROM Drive
    7.1 Channel Surround Sound Audio
Classic Warranty-3Years free parts & lab.

    £499

would save alot of hassle :-)

Or just keep a backup schedule. As long as you don't procrastinate on backups and keep to the schedule the worst loss that can happen is slightly smaller than your backup intervals. Oh and if you're making a raid make it RAID1, not RAID0.

As for that comp setup, the lower number (ending in 200 or 300) Geforce cards always suck badly and the GS suffix isn't helping. Those low end cards suck compared to Ati's low end offerings but ideally I'd buy a mid to upper range card.

I've always liked Monarch pc. http://www.monarchpc.com/

They are in Austin, great tech support, and they got Lian-li to make them a custom alluminum small form factor case called the Hornet (that's what my last desktop was). Their prices are pretty competitive, and they do assembly and a burn in test for cheap.
