Of course you could use Macromedia Flash as Cheap mentioned.

http://www.toonboom.com/ is a very popular package.. but you would have to pay for that.

There is a Free application that I have seen good results with called at http://www.synfig.com/

I suppose you could try Swish as an alternative to Flash.. makes flash compatible files.

just checked out the demo vid for toonboom, and they talk a lot about vectors in it, but i'm not sure if its limited to vectors or if it just takes them, i may download the demo after work and play around with it

the video demo was verry lackluster they mad a shitty 3 frame ball and bounced it around a clipart tree.. then showed some HORRIBLE qquality animatosn that look like those bad flash cartoons, not good ones.. but bad ones..

Haven't tried Imageready. How's that for animations? I have access to Premier, and I've done a lot of video editing with it, but not much of any cartoon style animation.
I reckon we'd need a good combination of tools, mixing in the audio and what not.

Check out Mirage, it's based on Aura which I have used (and is easy to use) made by Newtek, the guys who made lightwave.

I've used monkeyjam for stop motion and pencil animations. It's pretty nice. Straight to the point, and free.

Wasn't synfig created by a member of the boards here? I believe I remember a thread about it a while back.

i dowloaded the demo of toonboom today at work, so far i'm liking it, its vector based, (well not completley) but it seems much easier to use than i rember flash being from using it years ago,,

after playng around with it i made a simple animation of a potato man walking, and i feel like it could be a prog that i could get the hang of, thanks you all for all your sugestions, i will check out some others before i make my mind up completly
