Yea I know this aint a 2d or 3d stuff, but it could help for your 2d-3d concept. I found this today cleaning up my old HD, this is 4-5 years old for me and I find it kinda funny. My teacher gave this to us to help us improve character traits. Might be usefull or not but I tought I could share it with ya guys.
Feel free to add some more, since i'm not really a character artist i don't know how usefull it can be.

Perosnally i dont think this kind of thing helps. To me its all about instinct. you can either see a character and put something of a perosnality in it or you can't.
might be nore helpul to a writer ?

Ruz, I dunno, this sort of stuff helps me out.
It doesn't need to be as detailed as all that, but if you have a solid idea of what kind of place the character lives, and what their function in that world is, then you can give them a personality and design a functional, believable character around it.

I think that falls under the "When is it acceptable to Kill?" question. wink.gif

and RPG Flesh out guide 4TW!!
Im actually going to save this and ref it later. I may have to sort it by defining trait. hmm this could be interesting.

I do like brainstorming characters like this first, maybe not so insane as that list but yea sometimes if your a bit cloudy on some details a few scribbles helps.

I just see it visually, don't really care what he does for a living:) you could n't convey many of these things visually anyway.
I am not saying my way is right, just its the way I do it.

I always had a grudge against teachers anyway.
If I had been given a list like that I would have made him eat it:)

Yeah. That list isn't that useful. Sure it could help you out, but there are a lot of characters and creatures out there that are amazing that you probably couldn't answer a tenth of those questions with. I highly doubt pacman has any religious views of his own that we know of, or if Mario prefers Pepsi to Coke or whatever.

It depends if you're an imaginative person. Myself, I have a lot of trouble coming up with anything even approachign a good character design so this listing could come in quite handy. Its not so much whether these things will alter the gameplay or even the look of the character, but getting a fully filled out idea of what and who yuor character is in your head and then on paper or screen.

Illusions: Well, like I said, this list is far too detailed, normally you wouldn't even ask 1/10th of those questions, but just asking a few key questions when designing a character is often enough to resolve any issues with design, or spark new ideas of interesting things to add to the character.

I think too many people just draw something and go "Oh, this looks cool, that's enough!" ... but if you get to that stage and then ask a couple of quick questions about the character, and apply that to the design, you often find it can be pushed further and become something more than the sum of it's parts.

[/ QUOTE ]I've only ever finished two character models that were test for the D3 engine and I pretty much did what you've said above; asked myself a couple of really basic 'trait' questions and went from there.

The one danger with lists like this is that it has the potential to remove the 'abstractive creativity' involved with what is essentially an art form and right brained, not left.

If a teacher handed me something like that I'd go into 'why' mode... "why so many question", "why define a character this extensively", and so on...

Because if you know who your character is, you'll be able to define them far better when you come to actually draw them - you'll know what they should carry and why, how they should stand, what their expression should be... sure you could get all these down straight from your head, but taking the time to actually work all this stuff out should theoretically at least, lead to much richer, less generic character designs.

This might be useful but Tim Schafer used to create Friendster profiles for his characters. You could try Facebook. He has a character design GDC talk, it was quite good.
