I think it was an accidental discovery of a medical scientist, but I guess they just wanted to see if it turned troops into supersoldiers. Y'know, just incase.

Until 1966, LSD and psilocybin were provided by Sandoz Laboratories free of charge to interested scientists. The use of these compounds by psychiatrists to gain a better subjective understanding of the schizophrenic experience was an accepted practice. Many clinical trials were conducted on the potential use of LSD in psychedelic psychotherapy, generally with very positive results.

Cold War era intelligence services were keenly interested in the possibilities of using LSD for interrogation and mind control, and also for large-scale social engineering. The CIA conducted extensive research on LSD, which was mostly destroyed. [2] Project MKULTRA (also known as MK-ULTRA) was the code name for a CIA mind-control research program begun in the 1950s and continued until the late 1960s. There is much published evidence that the project involved not only the use of drugs to manipulate persons, but also the use of electronic signals to alter brain functioning; for details, see the MKULTRA article proper.

The British government also indulged in LSD testing; in 1953 and 1954, scientists working for MI6 dosed servicemen in an effort to find a "truth drug". (In all probability, MI6 was motivated by rumors that the Soviet Union had developed brainwashing drugs.) The test subjects were not informed that they were being given LSD, and had in fact been told that they were participating in a medical project to find a cure for the common cold. One subject, aged 19 at the time, reported seeing "walls melting, cracks appearing in people's faces … eyes would run down cheeks, Salvador Dalí-type faces … a flower would turn into a slug". After keeping the trials secret for many years, MI6 agreed in 2006 to pay the former test subjects financial compensation. Like the CIA, MI6 decided that LSD was not a practical drug for brainwashing purposes. [3]

There is a very interesting book called "ACID: The Secret History off LSD" that talks alot about MK-Ultra and other projects. It mentions a drug that was developed and tested in Vietnam called 3-quinuclidinyl benzilate or "BZ" that was reputed to have 10 times the hallucinogenic strength of LSD with none of the "mind expanding attributes." BZ appearantly was so powerful that there was a significant danger of death from siezure or asphixiation on vomit. There's a Wiki article on it here It was developed as a "battlefield incapacitant" and supposedly used in "at least one major operation" during Vietnam. A few years ago in Russia, when those Chechen rebels took over that theater and held all those people hostage, supposedly the gas that the Russian special forces pumped into the building was a similar chemical. Apperantly 117 of the 800 hostages died from the "effects of the gas." Here is an article I found on that.

There are people who believe that the CIA created the LSD explosion in the 60's as a social engineering project. They funded much of the research, often unbeknownst to the people doing the research, on it during the 50's, including Leary's experiments. From the Wiki article on LSD, "There have also been persistent claims of connections between the CIA and members of the so-called "Brotherhood of Eternal Love", most focussing on the mysterious figure of Ronald Stark, a reputed criminal who was alleged to have links to both the CIA and to paramilitary organisations including the PLO, as well as allegedly overseeing one of the world's largest LSD manufacturing and distribution rings, which operated in Italy, France and Belgium."

The "Brotherhood of Eternal Love" is responsible for originally distributing the "orange sunshine" acid. Supposedly in '69 Ronald Stark showed up at the Brotherhood's ranch with a kilo of pure LSD, enough to make millions of hits.

...and this is just fun. The website suggests staring at it for 10 seconds, but 15 to 20 will intesify the effect. Text seems to produce the most obvious distortions.
