WinMX, is it down for good?

I couldn't find any proper confirmation that winmx is down for good, only rumours. So if any of you polycounting guys and gals are using it and in addition know for sure if it is down for good, I would really like to know?

It's just one of those handy programs that you get really used to and all of a sudden it just submerges into the dark void of nothingness...

WinMX, I didn't even know that thing was still around. I haven't used it for years. In fact, I'm not even sure if I've used it this century laugh.gif.

He he... Although it had a lot of users worldwide and it was very handy for file sharing.

El Reg said it was only for a day but that was a few days ago. I think it's because the RIAA started throwing lawsuits around and these companies can't afford the legal battle that would need. Damn convenient system, just sue someone you know cannot afford defending himself and even if he was innocent, you win. Grab one of those internet radio ripping programs and feed them a station you like (hey, that's even legal!).

Sounds like the way many insurance companies operate. They don't have to payout because they've got the lawyer defensive line to deflect the little guys. Biggest legal scam there is IMO.

KDR_11k, yeah thx, I'll check the radio rippers out... Over here they are now talking about making it illegal to ripp your own cd's for the mp3-player... So you'll have to buy every mp3 tune, althouhg you have the cd as well...

Yeah guys it's all going 100% commercial and pay per tune these days. The big companies win, and the small indies get digested by the biggies...

That's utter bullshit and will never happen. Free applications such as Audacity can record straight from your soundcards output and into a wav editor without loss of quality. The results can be exported to either Mp3 or Ogg formats. But I probably shouldn't have explained that.

With the existance of home recording software, and the internet, I don't understand why the music industry still exists. Oh right, the teenage population continues to buy trendy crap marketed to expendable income. Ooops, I did it again.

He heh yeah until Audacity also becomes part of the big corporate. Then you'll need some sort of crack or decryption software in order to copy your cds like in dvds: because they will most likely also add some severe piracy safe code to the data on our usual cds. Of course it will be possible to still copy your cds to the mp3 format, but it will be more hassle and they will make sure you will feel like you're stealing your own cds tongue.gif

nah. that's just pessimistic thinking. it's been proven that mp3 downloading has done little to influence music sales. The industry has admitted it. it's an issue of quality. popular music just isn't that valueable anymore, so people buy less. i still buy albums, but only when the band produces a full album worth purchasing. that's rare. If the industry would strive to improve the quality of its products, and offer additional methods to discover them, the sales would improve. Until then, they're stuck in the 20th century fighting a battle they can't win.

Tried writing to your representatives yet? Unless Norway has somehow become a dictatorship the government has to answer to the people and actions like this clearly aren't in the interest of the people.

KDR_11k, I don't think it will happen to be honest. Cause it raised quite a stir when the government started talking about these things, and I haven't heard about it being put into effect. And the election gave us a new "labor-party" government that will be put into office in November when the 3 parties in this coalition get into agreement. In American terms I guess Democrats is the closest you get in order to describe the new Norwegian government, although a lot notches more left-wing in comparison. And I don't know too much about the German party system to compare with that. I don't think this cd-encoding will happen over here, or rather later than sooner I guess...

A simple addition to your host file will make it work again just add this to whats already in your hosts file and it should be up and running like nothing happened.

If you don't know what a hosts file is your better off looking someplace else for your file sharing needs because you'll probably end up screwing up your computer smile.gif
