Well, I didn't see the full movie, but the trailer made it look SERIOUSLY AWFUL. If they managed to take a good movie and spend a lot of effort constructing awful teasers and trailers, good work Hollywood...

I heard from some other people who've seen it that it's not very good. Didn't look like my kinda movie anyway... I think I'll avoid it.

I happen to agree with sundance. The world is so media saturated that everybody's becoming a critic and its extreamly annoying. These days if a movie (or even a game) is "good" its labeled as total crap. Walk in understanding that its not the most realistic thing in the world. If I was going to the movies for realism I'd go see documentaries.

Havn't seen stealth yet. the trailer looks pretty corny but i'd go into the movie expecting that.

Shit, I can turn my brain off for hours and enjoy 2 asians beating the fuck out of each other, or people blowin shit up for 3 hours, but this movie really looks like ass...

I mean... a lightning bolt that rewires an extremely detailed AI controlled airplane (why have such a smart airplane?) to where he understands what he is and starts destroying shit?

But then again, I haven't seen it so I can't really judge it!

i pretty much got past enjoying movies because of shiney special effects when i was 15, it takes a bit more now,, it doesnt have to be "deep" or anything, , but it needs somethign that makes me think they at least took the effort to try and make a good movie,,

this movie screams to me like empty summer action movie,, one of those storys that gets remade every summer with a slightly new coating of crap

yeah you really can't compare this movie to the comparatively venerable Short Circuit franchise, which if they made today would have a nu-metal soundtrack, Johnny 5 would be full CG, and there'd be no Steve Gutenberg.

Looking forward to seeing it. I'm with you Sundance, if I want intellectual enlightenment, I'll read a book (and I have a house full of books). Give me the bullets babes and bombast anytime. (usually, but it sad to see a movie that messes even that up, and ther4e have been a few this year, Episode III for one).

Scott, if you went to see Episode III expect bullets and babes, I don't think the problem was with the film. wink.gif

Incidentally, why is it that when some people say they don't like mindless popcorn action flicks, the counterpoint is often about "intellectual enlightenment" or the like? Man, there's just no middle ground anymore. I don't think anyone is going to confuse Batman Begins' societal contribution with Schindler's List, but that doesn't mean it's sucking shit through a straw down there with Catwoman, either. All I ask of any given movie is to keep me entertained in a fashion that doesn't include so much sighing and eye-rolling that other theater patrons suspect I'm suffering from some sort of nervous disorder.

Mindless fluff <=> perfectly acceptable film <=> intellectual enlightenment. It's not a boolean, yeah?

no. the world is black and white, good and bad, period. a movie must either be a series of explosions intercut between closeups of tits shaking, OR such art and intellectual fair as to make Citizen Kane look like a Jerry Bruckheimer flick. shame on you verm.

the world isn't black and white and it doesn't need to be.

    good movies i enjoy.

bad movies i leave my brain at the door and enjoy.

terrible movies are fucking terrible and i can't enjoy them, unless they're just abysmal, then they're funny.

I'm afraid that there are some movies that suck! they're not even funny, and weather i leave my brain at the door or not, i won't enjoy it.. that's what Stelth LOOKS like, but i havent seen it, so i won't comment on the movie it's self..

paradox. So a bad movie is actually a good movie because the outcome is joy anway ? and terrible is different from bad ?

I also don't see how you can allready walk into a movie with the intent that it is going to be bad so that you allready know that you can leave your brain outside. (Unless you are allready biased by the trailer into thinking it is going to be bad but then I also don't see the point of leaving the brain outside and going to watch it)

I guess you ment that you don't take the movie serious instead of "leaving your brain outside".

I think this way of thinking comes from the thought that you have allready payed so you might aswell stop bitching and "enjoy" the movie. As if there wasn't a different possibilie to enjoy yourself (even cheaper probably) in a true fashion than waisting your time noticing the stupidity of a movie but then telling yourself "ah well that might be stupid, senseless and annoying but I´ll just watch it anyway, not take it serious and enjoy".

That would be like looking at a painting where most of the things are wrong and ugly (yes art may be very relative but I think it is a good example) but some parts turned out good or fit. I don't think you will be telling yourself "ah well, the perspective is totally off, the anatomie is wrong most of the time, the colors hurt my eyes but I like the lips, and the eyebrow ... and the chin. I think I should not take it serious and enjoy"

Nothing against good entertainment (Batman Begins fa.) that is an artform and is interesting itself.

Now, I´m not holding up the intelectual film flag here but if you think a film is fx overloaded, plotempty, sex dominated (not porn wink.gif) and has not rythem at all I would say there is no point into talking yourself into thinking it is good.
YOU ARE THE CUSTOMER, as long as you keep that mentality films will evolve in that direction because that is what you are paying for.

Just like with every media. The true, the artfull and the selling. (all open for good combination)

I think I´ve drifted off once again, sry.

There is a point where a movie stops treating the audience as cognizant, and has to rely on pure visual fluff and over the top situations to entertain.

As some point the excuse of just brainless isnt enough. Unless you truly are saying you dont want to think (if so I believe meditation would be a hobby much more inclined to that statement). Brainless as used here isnt brainless at all, what is meant is "gullible". At some point a movie starts to force feed the audience drivel, because it has nothing else to offer. There is a balance when that drivel is so one dimensional that more and more audience members become aware of it. That point is different for each of us.

Stealth would be a perfect example. One has to go and question nothing at all to enjoy it. But what has one gained at the end other than a momentary high? I mean at least with a good drug, you can always rely on flashbacks. Its also not like you can talk about it on any believable level outside the movie itself. Movies like this leave nothing to be said. I mean are you going to exit it questioning the term of what isn't and is alive?

(This is coming from someone who has half a interest in Dukes of Hazzard mind you, so no ignorant comments about "Elitist" need apply. However, even here I can at least leave the movie and have a good discussion talking about the TV to movie translation.)

If you think 'Stealth' is high-concept, I guess you really are the lowest common denominator. And proud of it. Yeah, revel in your lowness, reach for mediocrity. Go you.

Christ, they could have changed all the dialogue in the trailer with the word 'Drama!' and it wouldn't be any different. Or the word 'cheese' for that matter. "Situation is critical!!!!" No, really?

Hmm... seems to be lots of bashing happening... I never saw the trailer, but I loved the movie. Both me and my Girlfriend were very impressed by it. It actually has a somewhat twisty plot, which I find to be incredibly uncommon these days.

why wont people that like crappy movies let people that dont want to like crappy movies not like crappy movies??
or even allow them to not like certain movies..

i hardly ever see these debates where people that dont like something feel the need to justify why.. only people that are so insecure about thier choice they feel the need prove the movie was good by giving a million excuses why it is okay to like bad movies, and how much of a complete asshole you are for even thinking its crap...

    guess what guys??!!!!

its okay to like bad movies.. i dont care and i dont think anyone else does either... so when someone else dosent like the movie, why take it as a personal hit?? every movie that seems to teeter on the verge of bad and good the same arument is presented.. well it dosent have to be amazing to be enjoyable.. well for some people it does.. whats really wrong with that? everyone is a critic, and i dont know if people know what that word means but they give good criticism as well as bad.. so while calling a movie a good and then by dismissing the ideas of people that dissagree with you by just calling them critics dosent really work because by making a decision to like the movie makes you a critic and it makes you just as dumb as those people you dont agree with..

It's all in the phrasing. When Sundance said he liked it, he didn't insult those people who hated it. He didn't say "This was so awesome anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron." However those people who don't like this, and other movies and threads in the past, make it sound like not only is their opinion that they didn't like it, but anyone who does like it, is an imbecile and beneath them on the IQ chain. I seriously doubt if someone said, "I hated this movie, it didn't do anything for me" That anyone would have a problem who did like it. It's all those holier-than-thou opinions that make it seem as if their broad sweeping generalizations should be gospel.

I saw this movie, and I enjoyed myself while watching it.

The way i see it if people keep seeing these crappy movies hollywood will make and more and more crappy movies. Id like to keep a fire lit under their ass to try to get these hollywood shakers and makers to try and go past the conventional and try to make as good and as original movies as possible.

Then they have the gull to complain about money loss from pirating of their movies, what about money loss from funding crappy ass movies and paying Keanu Reeves Millions to phone in his performance.

i too would like to see a shift in hollywood's motivation for creating movies (more art, less fluff), but as long as money is involved, i highly doubt it will happen.

fortunately (for me), i find that the number of "intellectual" movies available to see and/or rent more than satisfies my demand schedule. (see "primer" for example of a cool rental)

i'm torn on this situation,, cause I loved about schmidt, thought it was a more art driven movie and was really fresh,, but now theres a flood of movies coming out now that seem to take the slow monotone artsy pace, and they all seem like the same freaking movie, lost in translation, adaptation, punch drunk love, spanglish, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, while some of these movies i liked, and some i hates,, i am at the point that i'm getting sick of them,, overly artfaggered

i don't want movies to be art, i just want movies to be good, the problem is whats good for one is not neccesarly good for another, i constantly quote both alien and aliens to be 2 of my favorite movies of all time, and what makes them good to me is they were taken seriously when they were made.. ridley scott did not go into aliens seeking to make a sci fi movie,, or even a horror movie,

he went into it with the intentions of making a good movie that happened to be sci fi horror,, he put the same passion in it that someone would filming a shakespeare play, he didnt cop out with wity catchphrases and rebok advertisments and rap music soundtracks and slow mo back flips

with that said, i also have been known to like a large amount of bad movies, these i like for various difrent reasons, some are just soooo fucking bad you can't help but constantly be watching it going "what the hell was this guy thinking" (thanks uwe bol)

and other i may not like the over all movie, but certain things in it were one just right that it sways my opinion (Returner, Hellboy)

I like using my brain. I want my brain to be engaged by my entertainment. Hollywood would apparently rather I hand over my cash and shut up. I refuse!
