Illustrator, taking the first step into 3D *DELETED*

  I would suggest trying the free demos for a number of applications out there. Silo, Gmax (a totally free games only version of 3d Studio Max), 3D Studio Max (my fav), Lightwave, Maya, Modo, XSI. You might want to try Zbrush as well. Its similar to sculpting & painting only in 3d...sorta.
  
  Then there are other cheap/free alternatives.

  Wings 3D
  
  Guys, did I miss anything?
  
  Most of these companies offer demo's or evaluation versions.
