Textures in general

I wish to learn how to be a decent texture artist, but I'm having trouble finding material. I did a search on google for basic texture painting fundementals (not really in those exact words) and I really didn't get anything useful or even slightly related to my search. I'm struggling with the little bastards, including effect UV setup, tips on basic tex painting... you know, really basic. I've never really taken a classes (none are offered in my area), nor can I afford any book about texture painting and or UV setup.

do any of you have decent links for texturing basics and advanced techniques (for later)? It'd be greatly appreciated.
