Book: Modeling a Character in 3ds Max, 2nd Edition

Hi, i was wondering if anyone has this "famous" book and could give me some tips.
What is the diffrence betwean the first and seccond edition?
Does it have enough content were i can learn from, seeing that i already have modelign experiance see a char i already made http://www.apollostudio.nl/badname/wip/char.jpg (but I havent realy got a nice working flow)

So should I buy this book? and wich edition? Or do you know a better book?

Are you able to go to a nearby bookstore and check it out? hold it in your hands and browse thru it? see if it stacks up to some of the free character modeling tutorials you can find linked from this site. how much will it dent your wallet? I would recomend if your going for a book on characters Paul Steed wrote a book, and hes quite a character as well as he can make them, might compare that book with the one your thinking about.

Steed's techniques are absolutely archaic, and he seriously needs to update it. He's a good artist, but a poor software technician. I've had to re-train numerous artists after they read that book, and it's a real pain. If you're going to buy Steed's book, take it with a grain of salt.

Yep, rynos right. I bought the book and read it. Used his boolean techniques and ended up scrapping the whole meathod. Although it is good practice and interesting to see how other people model, i wouldn't suggest using the meathod in this book. I'm absolutely sure he's using a totaly new meathod by now.

correct me if iam wrong, but isnt 2nd edition a more modernized version of the last book paul steed released, i heard he was making a 2nd edition but i didnt know it was out already

thge problem is i cant go to the bookstore and actually see it

i need to order it online. So does this second edition have better updated techniques?

Since you can't go to a bookstore i'll call around and see if someone has it where i live and i'll drive over to look at it.

[edit] after reading the reviews it sounds like he's still using editable mesh... which is something that you CAN use it just dosn't have awesome tools that editable poly does

umm so i understand that this book is outdated and not worth it?

So wich book or dvd can me realy learn good tehcniques to model and texture a character? I realy cant find a good one

only a highpoly one, but i want a game model.

look at poopinmymouth's tutorials, they are damn good, will point you to some really usesfull plugins, and they are free.
