Thoughts on buying work software through Steam?

What do you guys make of it? Is it totally fine to you, or is it annoying starting up Steam to fire up X software? I have a few on there, I use Designer there and it's generally okay for me. I don't really like it, but there's some fun side effects like it tracking your hours in the software, imagine if I had those stats on Maya or ZBrush...

Personally I hate steam for it's added step to simply launch an app, GoG makes things much simpler but I don't know if they use to sell softwares too ; but the good thing with steam (or GoG if they appear to go that way too) is that licenses are perpetual. That's a huge plus nowadays

Steam is am annoying  extra step  yet  I bought a few  software  there I wouldn't even think about probably  like  some pretty old versions  of Modo  and  Mari  and  also an absolute jewel:   Reality capture  , which once was a subscription  based on Steam  but   before they were bought out  by Ubisoft  they granted unlimited , unrestricted by any conditions  full  permanent license  to their Steam subscribers .     So thanks  Steam to be.    And that older version is simpler to use  and better in general than current one. On my GPU at least.

interesting, thanks guys -- I agree on all points. @gnoop do you still use modo and mari? @Vexod14 agree! perpetual website download is king..

I hate extra steps and I hate bloat that takes up space on my PC. I don't want to have to be logged into Steam in order to use Maya or something.

While I do love Steam for all it's features and such, there is a lot of downsides. First of all, if possible I want my software not being relying on having internet and as mentioned there is a startup speed but also the fact that if you tie everything into one account, if that account gets compromised, you lose it all. It's a bad idea, if I have option for it, standalone (and offline) software/games is always my go to, GoG is great for that.
Also, I really hate the fact that you MUST update your program all the time, which is just moronic if it works. Then again, we don't own anything anymore.

I feel being "locked into alternative distribution means", is (THE/an) issue across the net currently.
With this new bill "passing" in the states it is doing exactly that ^ HR 77057

If people continue this trend of locking down applications behind "middle men", then you should also have offline methods catering to those that wish to NOT be included into networks/hiveminds where one must do (insert doxing here) to obtain materials of any kind.
Which is interesting seeing as there have been countless exposures of peoples "private information", & we are just continuing as if this is not an astronomical issue, baffling/strange behavior really.

am i allowed these statements or is it an issue, feel free to edit to post instead of warning, that would be cool and it helps me and you at the same time in that, i dont get warned and you limit our speech, i will not re-edit it and put things back, everybody wins.

Well, you were warned last time because you posted anti-vaccination conspiracy nonsense, and I deleted it. As a group we moderators really have no patience for conspiracy & misinformation here.

Whenever someone receives a warning from one of us moderators, only the member can see the warning, it is completely invisible to everyone else. It’s like a DM essentially. The key difference for the moderators is that warnings are easier to keep track of, to help us moderate repeat-offenders.

I can see though that it’s a bit of a shock to be on the receiving end of a warning message, so I try to defuse tensions in the message itself.

Anyhow sorry everyone for the derail here, but iam717 it seems you wanted to talk about this here instead of in a DM. Fine by me to publicly explain things (except for causing a topic derail!) and as always if anything is unclear, please feel free to ask.

it's a pity .    Trolling politely  anti-vaxers, moonhoaxers,  flatearthers , qanoners  is a small guilty  entertainment  at a slow day :)

It's fine I think I got enough consensus on Steam as work software distribution. Not great but cool how it has some persistent licenses still.

@iam717 I think having offline versions are great generally, but it's way easier to duplicate and distribute. The most chill licensing design I've come across is your download pings the licensing server every 7 days or something, then you could have it offline for a bit but you'd have to re-verify that you actually own it eventually. What do you think about this? Piracy VS Ownership, where's the happy middle ground in your eyes?

Thru the years, I purchased a couple programs on Steam.

good point(s) where Steam does an excellent job for Software users on that platform:
    • I like that Steam makes moving to another PC and opening up your software generally easy.

    some pain points:
    • setting up Steam to prevent unwanted popups or other distractions from appearing can be a chore.
    • Steam hoggs up RAM, why does it need at least ~566MB up to 750MB for idling around?
    • I loath the mandatory time tracking on Stores like Steam and tend to always set those stores offline whenever possible.
    • Steam servers can crap out whenever a massive sale is going on, potentially barring you from accessing your Software. Some Software even has always online on it (thus I refunded/stopped using those Tools)
    • Downgrading/Upgrading is often unnecessarily difficult.
open up the steam console, find and type in an app id,manifest id, and so on and on.
    • Preventing Software updates is often made difficult on Steam. Sometimes I want/need to use a specific version. Offline mode is necessary to prevent this unwanted behavior. [It might make sense for Games but imo not for Software.]
    • Biggest point against Steam for Software: being limited to a maximum of one opened instance.[It might make sense for Games but imo not for Software.]
A trick albeit costly is purchasing twice, like purchasing version 2025+2026 and to keep at specific versions to be allowed of having "two open instances".
For Software, basically any other store option is preferred and actively searched for and in before reluctantly having to purchase important programs thru Steam.
