Something to stop checking news. For a single weekend only. Something a bit sad and lonely with a smell of landscape like LeGuin's "Planet of exile" or something weird and oddly intriguing like "Amatka" by Karin Tidbeck. Any suggestions?

try Stephen Baxter - the later stuff is weirder and less scifi.
if you've not read Ian Banks you should - anything from the culture series
