Hello. I'm not sure where to post it, since it's about real world weapon details, but it's related to modeling so I hope it's right place.

Trying to model Mossberg 590A1, and while I was modeling double action rails, I noticed that barrel is actually getting wider towards receiver.
I searched all info I could find, but was able only find one video with measurements, I edited barrel to match measurements and it's visual look, but now it looks a bit weird and doesn't match reference image.

 The only thing I can assume, is that it's wider uniformely ->

Now it matches the reference ->

But looks ridiculous ->

    I'm not a gun expert and so do not know if the cylindric thing at thhe bottom is a cylinder.. meaning: has a circular crossection alll the way.. so if it matches the reference.. then it matches the look. There is also the hand thingy hidding something.
    You are not into 3D printing a functional shotgun do you :tongue: ??

    nae, I just have a problem getting things right on eye, so I get as many references and measurements as I can get. That's always been my problem which I managed to improve a bit in a years, but still struggling. I need LOTS of references from all possible angles, I can't make anything at all if I lack of reference images.

    Same goes to this damn stock shape - I simply can't visualize how it should look, because of that I can't make it, I was able to get better idea only thanks to AI 3D generation thing. Semi-organic shapes for me are incompregensibly hard to do.

    @Lemenus when modeling firearms you usually start with the cartridge because that gives you the diameter of the barrel and from there you can extrapolate most dimensions. For Mossberg 590A1, it's 12-gauge so I looked up the bore diameter for that and another search gave me the outer barrel diameter as well. Knowing the barrel length you pretty much have everything you need to get this fairly accurate. Hope this helps:

    [Edit] I don't quite follow why you say that needing references images is a problem. If you want to model a complex shape/object accurately you need lots of references, this is normal and there is no way around that.

    For the moment I'd suggest pause this project and perhaps attempt a simpler object to practice on! maybe SxS shotgun since ergonomic shapes i.e. butt-stock, tapered barrel etc... appear to be an issue, especially using a polygonal modeling workflow alongside other info that people had already shared here

    its not a uniform thickness along the full length
    the receiver end is thick because it's where the explosion happens. more metal == less injured users
    the rest of the barrel is thinner because it doesn't have to contain as much pressure and weighs less
    this has some nice cutaways in it where you can see how the whole thing functions

    I am just curious . Read somewhere that games shifts off  license  agreements   with gun manufacturers . Seeing them as  a bad PR  "promoting guns to minors".     Thus why the exact precision and model  which would require licensing for sure ?    I  think  I saw an assault rifle with cocking handle on the opposite side a while ago vs obvious prototype.    So why just not make the barrel fit?

    It's not about game licensing and stuff, I'm trying to up my skill, so I care about precision. If I'll ever put it in my game - of course I will alter it.

    Ummm... nae. I was reaching low hanging fruits for many years, I think it's time to rip off the bandaid and go hard. This project I've chosen specifically to traim myself since my skill for many years of my career stagnated.
    And considering stock - after some struggling and research, I've done some progress:

    The artifact there is beacuse of mirror - this stock is asymetrical, the slot for shell on another side is on a bottom

    @poopipe
    tbh i'm kinda ashamed that I haven't found this video myself, thanks for the share
