Hi everyone,
I'm currently working on a puzzle game project in Unreal Engine 5, but I’ve hit a wall regarding the overall look of my environments.
I have three main areas I'm working on:
The Lobby
Egg Puzzle Room
Water Puzzle Room
4. Puzzle
Technically the gameplay works, but visually the scenes feel "flat" and artificial. I am specifically struggling with Materials and Lighting. My textures look too clean or repetitive (tiling issues), and I can't seem to get that realistic surface detail. The lighting also feels like it's not doing enough to sell the atmosphere.
Please keep in mind that this is still a heavy WIP, so I'm open to changing anything based on your feedback.
Here are some screenshots of my current progress:
1. Water Puzzle

2. Egg Puzzle Room

3. Lobby Room

4.Puzzle

My main questions are:
Materials: My surfaces look very "video-gamey" and plastic. How can I break up the texture repetition on the walls and floors? Any tips for adding better imperfections?
Lighting: Does the lighting help read the shapes, or is it too washed out?
General Atmosphere: How can I improve the focal points (especially for the puzzle elements) without making the scene look messy?
I’ve included "Lighting Only" views as well to show the setup without textures.
Any feedback, paintovers, or tutorials you could point me towards would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.
