What I'd really love to see is the ability to copy paste material trees like this between different max files or, as a workaround, simultaneously opened max sessions, provided the exact layout and position of nodes is preserved. Do you think that would be possible with this or a slight modification? E.g. saving the layout to an intermediate file.
Although I have to add that there doesn't seem to be a lot of need for this in general:

Could you send me a sample .max(saved to the lowest 3ds Max version you can) file with a few materials (no need for textures) set up the way you organize them? I'd like to see what the initial state of the materials looks like in the SME.
miauu's Slate Material Cloner has been updated to version 1.1
Changelog:
+NEW: Export and Import with Layout Preservation. Export selected materials to a .mat file with their original node positions preserved. When imported, materials are restored to the exact same layout in the Slate Material Editor.
