Work In Progress Threads

Each entry must include a work-in-progress (WIP) thread, posted in this section.

Post updates as often as you can. You can include work-in-progress videos as you go about this contest, but at a minimum, periodic screenshots must be posted.

Reference sheets are required. If you're using concept art, please include credits to the artists as much as possible. Reverse image search is great for finding the source of an image: Google, Bing, TinEye, Yandex.

Although it's not a requirement to reply to others' threads, it would be nice to keep the community alive, well and thriving. We're all in this together!

Threads must be titled like this:
BRAWL2 [Role] Your Design's Name, Your Artist or Team Name

For example:
BRAWL2 [Environment] Pizza Town Blastorama, mastapimp420

Roles:
  • Animation
  • Character
  • Concept
  • Environment
  • FX
  • Prop
  • Vehicle
  • Weapon
Optional: If you would like to create a tribute piece, for example to pay tribute to Kevin Johnstone or to anyone else, please add[Tribute]to the end of the title, for example:
BRAWL2 [Environment] Pizza Town Blastorama, mastapimp420 [Tribute]

______________________________________________________________________________

Breakdowns

Please include breakdowns with the finished work, of all materials, presented as you deem necessary for clean readability.

Example:
Texture sheets, wire frames, etc., sculpts (gray/clay render, simple lighting), callout sheet presenting the major elements.

Wireframes should be backface-culled, for example:

credit: Joe Wilson

It's OK to present texture sheets as flats, or as multi-layer images, flat or on the model, for example:

credit: Joe Wilson

There are no specific texture or triangle limits, except that your content must be renderable in a real-time 3D renderer. If you choose to work within a specific limit, please indicate these limits in your thread.

No paint-overs on screenshots allowed, except to add subtitles and/or framing elements like logos and artist names.

References must be included. You must include an image of the inspirational piece/concept as it appears in the original design.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Screenshots & Lighting

All contest art must be screenshot directly from a game engine (Unreal, Unity, Godot, etc.) or equivalent real-time rendering setup (Marmoset Toolbag, Sketchfab, etc.). If your display is less than 4k, it's ok to combine multiple shots together, for example with scripts.

Real-time lighting only, only what can actually be used in a real-time 3D game title.

All real-time solutions are allowed... SSAO, cascade shadow volumes, etc.

Beauty & breakdowns at 1920x1080 (Full HD), with one "hero" shot at 3840x2160 (Ultra HD).

Include thePolycount BRAWL² Tournament logo in your hero image (above image includes alpha, for your benefit), optionally in the rest of your images.

NO paint-overs of any kind, touch-ups, or post-process solutions, other than what is provided within the real-time renderer. Except... to add the BRAWL2 logo, artist/team names, subtitles, or framing elements.

The Rules

  • All artwork must be original and made specifically for this contest.
  • No artwork previous created before this contest will be considered for final voting & judging.
  • Absolutely no A.I. the reason for this contest is to challenge your skills & abilities.
  • No NSFW, pornography, that means no nipples or genitals, folks.
  • Minimal gore, some blood/damage is ok but try to keep it tasteful, no threats or inciting violence.
  • No overly religious pieces, i.e. the Pope as a K-Pop star (as fun as that might be!).
  • No overtly political / propaganda themes.
  • No insulting / group-demoting / racism / sexism style elements.

There are no specific texture or triangle limits, except that your content must be renderable in a real-time 3D renderer. If you choose to work within a specific limit, please indicate these limits in your thread.

21 weeks is plenty to bust out a solid design. You're welcome to submit more than one design if you wish to do so and yes, if you have the time and energy you may enter more than one entry as well for any of the positions.

This is a video game art challenge, remember to challenge yourselves!

Be kind, have fun.

Judging

Judging for thePolycount BRAWL² Tournament will first be done by public vote at the end, also by a panel of professionals. So we'll have crowd favorites, and judges favorites.

We'll add more about this later...

Prizes

Prizes for the PolycountBRAWL² Tournament are fairly simple: There aren't any, ha!
Will we have prizes in the future? Perhaps, but for now the contest is purely for the sake of personal achievement in game art.

Oh, wow awesome, if more people can spread the word, artstations stuff stopped me from telling people again.(TODAY:5/6/2025 one post immediately stopped from talking to anyone, pm or comments, then started to like posts and then they made it so it says too many requests, lol artstation is 100% against artist now that aren't feeding their a.i. libraries.)
Also anyone wanting more limitations it is there trying to please all levels is not easy and they can also start later if they want a tighter ending. (i.e. when they can)

Heck yeah! Was totally expecting for this to cook for a couple more weeks…so thanks @iam717 for all your efforts!

I do wonder, however, if it would be better to pare back the scope a bit (as alluded in the discussion thread) to keep it more focused, and if nothing else, easier to organize and judge???

It’s an honest question and ultimately I just want to see what a group of artists can create/inspire when working on a shared goal…so whatever the case is totally fine!

    Lets go!!!

Wondering about that as well, guessing triangle count - i.e. minimum and maximum limit?

As an example for a vehicle:

    "Vehicle:
    2 triangles -2k - 50k
Lived-in, usable, wow factor, this can also be a mount!"

...fairly tight if you're used to working with 100k+ budgets but obviously this challenge after all is an exercise in pushing ones-self beyond our comfort zone   B)

Yeah I have to agree... I'm glad the excitement is there however it feels a little rushed, the theme is a little ambiguous which I'm not sure helps and doesn't capture the spirit of the original brawl, which was focused on remaking/remixing fighting game characters and stages.  Do we have people who are judging? This feels like this needed a little bit more time to cook, the excitement is great though!

TLDR; tell me what makes you happy, tighter? more polys? less polys? brawl more? or bra-wl less?

Interaction & responses? whoa, really didn't expect this but yeah at least on my end i am hype (for now.)

Yeah me to, wanted to get it out of the way though & see what happens if we did something spontaneous and see what hype & or response's came from it.
The reason for the positions is to try to get anyone & everyone interested, i felt this wasn't going to get any traction but to my surprise here we are.
Let me see if i can show you what i mean about my decision to try to add everyone.

Example: going to a party, club (fun, fun, fun) costume party 'anything like this', the entertainment part doesn't just play say, rap music on repeat it adds variety.  Do not go as the same character to a costume party, I wanted to have variety (levels) of artwork.  Felt it was also 'not the normal thing to do', and i felt it stood out more.  (i.e. again as many as possible entering.)

    @Neox
Continues, speaking on levels the reason for that is for anywhere from 2 triangles to 1000 triangles (are for those that where interested in it being quick) there WAS an indicator but i suppose it read as cluttered and was removed (not by me) terms i wouldn't have used where also added. (not by me)  I have to play with the direction of how the site is being handled so i didn't edit it back in.  But yes its for lowpoly people to come on in get excited and show us what they got.

Then the mid-to-high levels are for those of you that want to enter and make a portfolio piece.  I see the reason now a certain mentioned site above split briefs up into parts.  (but i myself am not a supposed multi-million dollar site) controlling the community or at least at one point is able to, the communication issue is an issue for me, i do not see the harm in sharing this thread and infoThey also stopped making challenges did anyone notice after you saw that they sided with the (data)A.I. collecting libraries.

    @sacboi100k+    want it?
I thought of small packaged vehicles / mounts being entered since in the previous thread it was mentioned "we are doing this on our free-time", so i thought limiting the count would help with that.  Since reading that statement meant no AAA content would be made.  I am all for higher.

    @R3D
If peeps want that, we can change it, but yeah, i see what you mean.  We still have time to ..change.. things if everyone wants so, though yesterday wasn't a great day for me and i was about to just hand this over to Eric and let him take over, idk if he wants that.

@Alemja("doesn't capture the spirit of the original brawl")
Yeah in a way it doesn't but it also does, it leaves it open, reason it is left open was to incorporate some tribute pieces people wanted to share about their "friends", i suppose and i didn't want them left out so i couldn't close it like that for those.
If anyone has any ideas on how we can tighten this up and not alienate interested participants, i am all ears.  (Reference Example:(in green)mentioned above). This is for all of us and i want to project that.

    @kanga
Ha, hmm interesting mention, i see what you are getting at.  Well from entering nearly every challenge / contest this was usually the case so it was automatically added to follow suite with those and to prevent "heated debates", of one vs another, think it would take away from the "fun" factor this was/is supposed to introduce.  I read it as playful banter so i am not taking it so seriously, if people are fine with, it i am also.  I want fun and not debates if that helps.

Topic:  As always we do have some time left and if you all think tightening things up more will help & keeping everyone interested then i(we) am all ears on how this can happen.  (checking the low poly thread, i liked how that helps some peeps with the "free-time" situation and thought those whom do not have much can still enter with entries like those.)

Had AAA highest triangle counts but thought people would complain about those (see time constraint mentions) and i lowered it to about mid level.

Hope this helps everyone, again the reason for this way of doing things is i wanted to add, concept artists in here somehow.  Since it would make for more interesting selections and entries and help with those that can not come up with their own interesting designs to stand out.   i.e. concept artist could be posting now was the original idea to prep for the main event.

Thinking bout the entrants and giving them more time to reference and think over what inspires them (the theme) and replicating it for the contest.  (theme) to see some wacky out there content that we do not normally see and "arting" for the sake of art, i.e. leaving it open to imagination, like a prop that is also a character, not for the transformer aspect but the fun unexpected one. *topic* this is wordy to be as informative as possible.

The "not by me" editing was by me :D

If it was up to me I would suggest simple numbers for the targets, e.g. Characters = 5000 triangles. With a note that if artists want to do theirs with less, go for it, just let us know you are doing so.

Otherwise, it's going to be difficult for the judges, trying to judge 100-tri models side-by-side with 5k-tri models. I think a stricter spec is better for artists, especially real-time 3d artists.

However, it's ultimately not up to me to decide, I think this is still your contest to manage. My editing was to try to help make it easier for people.

My inclination is to have it a bit more focused for our first time back and to stick more to the original Brawl, perhaps with some further room for riffs and improvisation? After all, majority votes were for that in the initial polling (I voted “other” as in Brawl without prizes). Also, I couldn’t find the brief for the original competition and wasn’t around during then, but it seemed rather successful.

I agree that it’s too ambiguous and it’s open ended nature seems not all that different from a root-level Polycount ”pimping and previews” section. I get that it’s still low stakes with no prizes, but it’d still be nice to treat it as a contest (in the spirit of competition and camaraderie) with judging as such; and as mentioned above, that can be difficult and hard to manage with lots of categories and themes.

I don’t know if there are any right or wrong answers here, and probably more about what you will able to manage @iam717. Hopefully, other members will express their own opinions on what direction they prefer and give you a better idea on where to steer this ship…it’s a ton of work and large time commitment, so thank you!

Nah all good, specs for vehicles/mounts capped at 50k are fine well at least for me, because I've been working on a large asset creation technique + non industry pipeline which at this stage of testing just generating the prototype piece using an hybrid trim sheet approach, whilst also looking into texture atlas's, that seems IMHO promising to adopt as a personilsed workflow so anticipate I'd come in under anyway.

Side note, skimimg through the 2011 Brawl Tournament

And since there's feedback here related to lack of theme as yet, might start the ball rolling plus nod to the original contest fighting brief - so howabout a Mad Max theme (rad vehicles alongside buff staunch chars do go well together  :)  ) or whatever dystopian world/universe environment 'set in' thingy?

I like the idea of restricting it to a genre as with the previous Brawl. A fighting game stage gives a pretty good idea of scope and what you need to do. The current prompt right now can be anything.

If we wanted to continue with the idea we can pick a popular genre (several new ones since 2011) and then let it go from there.
    - Hero shooters
    - Mobas
    - Roguelikes
    - Soulslikes
    - Third person open world adventure
    - Boomershooters
    - Lootershooters

Pick a character, vehicle, or vertical slice to remix. If you keep the multiverse idea, you can say change the style or genre for the thing you pick. You could go with one theme like the Mad Max/Post apoc idea.

Asking for clarification on the texture limits. What is splitting? Does each "pass" count as a texture?

4x textures at 4096 ... does that mean 4 material trim sheets (for environment), each with any number of "passes", each material at 4096? Like one metal, one rock, one paints, one fabrics?

Or does it mean that each texture pass is a texture and you get four? Like one albedo, one roughness, one normal, one metallic each at 4096 each, and that's everything? Make one single trim material?

TLDR; everything green will be added someway into the general theme and configure it for readability with the recently posted paragraph above.
@Eric: My editing was to try to help make it easier for people.
difficult for the judges, trying to judge 100-tri models side-by-side with 5k-tri models
And it was helpful, i told ya i appreciated the formatting its much better than what i had since i.d.k. how to do all them text tricks and a new set of eyes on it was needed my posted version was kind of cluttered at the end there.  (and) you added you to it so that is why i didn't re-edit it to much, you know how to do this formatting stuff for sure.

"difficult and hard to judge & manage with lots of categories and themes."
Yeah didn't think it over about the judging, figured we'd get one from each category and then for the other judges they can do what they can with whatever knowledge they collected over the years about the other positions and best give their % of value in points towards the pieces.  (figured they would "discord" and discuss between each-other on a set date they agree upon)

"room for riffs and improvisation" - i agree with this, some things to think about over the next few days, i have visitors for a week hopefully somewhere between there i can stick in some time to combine the suggestions.  Probably just add what is said to the above and fix up some verbiage to fit it in.
Any mods/admins with time and want to do that can shove it upon in there if they wanted, i'd still do it just if you had more time and a good way to configure it then go ahead.

Mad Max theme, dystopian world/universe environment, seems like everyone is in on this and it doesn't seem bad so i am in on this.

Popular genre with the multiverse idea, change the style or genre for the thing you pick.
    - Hero shooters
    - Mobas
    - Roguelikes
    - Soulslikes
    - Third person open world adventure
    - Boomershooters
    - Lootershooters
    Pick a position to remix.

Combo with the above works well enough for me.

    Hi there,
Splitting seems to be a collection of material maps equaling a 4096x4096 "atlas" map.  If you chose to split it up, the link on the old brief probably helps more if you haven't seen it explain it better: https://polycount.com/discussion/82093/the-brawl-tournament-brief-and-specs

But yea to be honest i am not an environment artist and i was hoping one would chime in (eventually), i just copied what the old brief was stating.
They seem to understand it (those entering for that category) so i sort of just shoved that in here, not having learned how an environment artist does their thing, since it seemed to have recently changed to these trim sheets from the standard i learned about which was like a character map texture layout route (all in one map).

Thanks peeps this helps seems more community feed back as i was hoping for so appreciate all the feed back, its for us so we should together be saying what we want if anyone disagrees with the green stuff highlighted which will be added speak now.  Till then.

The idea is that each artist (or team of two) will create their own WIP thread. In fact, it's kind of required. Or were you thinking some shared WAYWO-style show-your-latest-work thread?

    Welcome to Polycount!

I think you don't need to list the source for every reference. Just for the main image you are using as your primary reference, it's nice to credit the artist if it's not made by you personally.

Think about how it would feel if someone else used your art as inspiration for their piece, and wouldn't it be great if they gave you credit.

nope you can make up your "own", if you want to.

Edit: to explain more, the idea behind using "existing" works is to alleviate the current situation with these ... "generators", that are taking everything.  At least for me it makes me feel better sharing work if i just replicate what is already there and "altering it a bit".   It is like idc(to an extent) cause its not 100% my own thing.  (no permissions given, to use the stuff though, outside this contest.)
