Counter-Strike 2 carrying over skins

Cs2 was announced today and I was surprised to see that all current skins are carrying over. I read on their website that the models have been made higher res. How is it possible that they can have different models but also use the same skins?

They likely polished up and repurposed the old source files. Big company project files are backed up during development for handoff and iteration purposes and preserved for this very reason.
From what you have posted it reads: only stock weapons will look bling bling.. the skins will just look like before.
The fact that the weapon models have been updated, doesn't mean that the weapon models used for legacy skins have been updated.
My guess would be : they added more texture passes to the old models (roughness) for consistency, and this new subtlety will will carry over to legacy skins ; but the new models will from now on be the standard for skin authoring.
Now it could be that they updated the models while still using the old UVs layout, but I highly, highly doubt it - keeping both versions is much more simple and efficient.
I wasn't surprised - you didn't have to be an avid reader of video game news to be conscious of what happened with overwatch 2 ..
