ASK/HELP ¿How many texture sheets needs my AT-ST? ASK/HELP
Hi everyone, this is the firts post that i make and I want to ask you guys for some help and advice.
The thing is that i have this model, i have the high and the low, and now i'm making the unwraps but i want to make the more optimal as possible for a 4k textures.
Well, I have divided the model in 4 parts: cabin, body, left and right leg.
For this model, how many textures sheets you think he needs? I had though in 2 texture sheets maybe, cause i want to make the legs with the same unwrap each other, but i'm realy insecure cause is my firts big model and i don't have make more that 1 texure sheet in all my life :_)
Unwraps for the left leg, i make the other one with copy this one with reference and finally make a mirror

The answer is basically not to worry about it and use as much as you need. Premature optimisation is the root of all evil!
If you want to be more systematic, you can use texel density as a guide for how to scale your islands and when to split them to a new textureset. Usual benchmarks are 10.24-20.48px/cm.
I think it's a good idea to start with whatever makes the simplest workflow, and only go more complicated if you really need to.
Texturing the whole thing with one sheet probably makes it easiest - less balls to juggle in workflow. So, you might try that first and then, only if you just cannot find a way to get enough resolution somewhere that you need, then consider breaking some parts into separate sheets.
Don't expect to do it once and be done. A few trial runs is almost always necessary to find the best solution.
Okay, i will try to be more practical and less perfectionist, is a big piece for me and the insecurity comes.
I want to ask one thing more, and is that, i usually know 2 methods to bake objects.
1º with all objects with 1 smoothing group and the 2º with auto smooth/custom smooth
In your expirience, whta do you think is better?
it's not a matter of cutting corners or not being perfectionist. Just a way to do things so that you arrive at the best solution quicker and don't cause problems for yourself.
Per baking questions, you should make a separate thread for that with descriptive title. that way people who know a lot about that sort of thing will see it. That's not something I know enough about to answer.
