Manual retopology newbie (3DCoat)

I've started to learn to do manual retopology using 3Dcoat.
I'm just wondering if it's normal for manual retopology to be messy when you're starting out? Does it get any better as you do it more?

What are some things you wish you knew when you started to learn?

Work with less topology to "block" it out, which avoids the messy and lumpy look. Afterwards, you can then subdivide it and relax the vertices for more even/denser distribution.

This is coming from someone who is still new to it: I wish that when I started, I knew not just that triangles are okay, but specifically how to use them. I could have saved a lot of time.
