Beginner 3d artist needs advise

Hello everyone! I’m a beginner 3d artist, originally from Ukraine but for past 6 years lived in US and about a week ago moved to Montreal, Canada.

I’ve been learning 3d modeling for a year now (going on online courses), built a little portfolio and right now looking for job or internship.

But I keep getting declines...
So I would really appreciate all kind of advises you guys can give me! Should I keep looking for job or maybe you can suggest me some courses. Or maybe you know the places where I can get a job or internship.

I would say your portfolio is not there yet, is shows that you are just starting out in 3D and lacks the quality needed to get employed. I would recommend to pick a specialization and grab a couple of online courses in order to improve your skills.

Tutorials/courses are good for picking up techniques. I think it is good to try to do a lot of them and see similar things done from multiple different people.

I think getting models from games and reverse engineering them is good to help keep you from focusing efforts in the wrong places. That can be important too.

Modding or building a game is also good to help stay focused on what really matters, and also helps to understand overall picture of how models work in games. You will also naturally do a lot of redundant work which builds speed, you'll solve lots of problems so you'll develop the ever important problem solving/debug skills, and you start to think about how your work is interpreted by an audience.
That would be my number one recommendation: find a game that you like that is moddable, join a team and make some new content for it. Perhaps only doing 100% modeling in isolation might get you a job-winning portfolio sooner but I think if you show up to a job armed with more real-world game making experience that is going to help set you apart. It's good if you are the one helping other people solve problems versus other way around.

I agree that your portfolio looks like beginner work, which is perfectly normal because only one year of modeling is just barely enough to get to grips with the basics.

I'd go take a look at Georgian Avasilcuteis (probably mispelled his name but you can find him easy enough) on twitch. He is a character/prop artist and charges very reasonable price for tutorship.

to be frank, doesn't matter how long you or anyone have doing models, but do aware of the workflow and keep trying to learn, i changed the way i learn and learn new method alot
