Need some advice on starting the Freelance way

Hello everyone!

Hope this is the right place to post this..

Freelancers of this forum, how was it when you started freelancing? Do your portfolio need to have a combination of styles and assets to be able to be employable? Or like do you focus on only character/only environments from the beginning?
