Plus, MS is already devoted to open source software. I work closely with their teams on glTF standards, exporters, and viewers. Investment in The Blender Foundation only makes sense.

True we did a project with the Microsoft open source engine BabylonJS. And Blender does have the best exporter.

I've done a bit more ready about this and feel a bit silly about my initial reaction.

It's not like it was Autodesk giving the money. :P

Now my question is ... only $30K? Ha ha!

Yes a Corporate Gold Membership is 30k a year.

Aye, their staff is super helpful regarding babylon itself (which our company'll probably be switching to shortly) and the 3ds max gltf exporter..

What kind of use of BabylonJS would that be? Is it web games?

That sounds pretty cool, but it says it's in "public preview" state --there's some things yet in their to-do list like user input and font rendering. I'm not sure if @cptSwing's team would be using it in this state.

I don't work in games anymore, it's more interactive story-telling with 3D in the vein of the things you see on three.js' showcase page ... while not my decision to make, it seems as stable as threeJS by all accounts - those two being the only serious players in the web3d market afaik.
