Burnout (3d Modeling)

Hello Everyone :D what's good?
My name Harsimran and im from india im doing 3d artwork for almost 2+ years which started as hobby.

Please share your views on this? (long post)

i was working on my portfolio doing some 3d product Renders. the idea was to use premade assets and improve & show my texturing/shading rendering skills.

i do model sometimes and enjoy it but that's very rare. Maybe with organic shapes.for example:- The project i worked on, a ice cream bar/strawberries

which i enjoyed the modeling progress.(cinema 4d/Zbrush)

Usually i would use pre made assets to avoid modeling headache and do the rest of the work.

So usually i would work alone on personal projects.( only the stuff which i would really enjoy creating and would make me happy)

But recently me and my friend decided to work together and selected some stunning photography reference of a product.

so i was pretty excited & confident about the texturing shading lighting rendering part of the project but modeling not so much.

so we divided the project i was suppose to model 2 products out of 4 .

my friend modeled it in few hours,and i'm stuck here frustrated ,feeling burnout , more i tried to model more stressful it got. i mean i have this brain fog that i cant even remember the techniques i can complete the model.

so almost 2+ days past, i didn't felt like finishing the modeling.

so long time i was trying to model simple products and i just realized that how much i suck at modeling.

now because of me my friend is also going to feel bad because he really tried to help me to teach me some basic modeling techniques so i can finish this modelling of 2 products.

I don't know what should i do anymore.

i mean in these past 2 years i been just playing around with texturing lighting render and some fluids dynamics simulations. (i love creating nature environment scenes mostly)

now according to me i feel like i don't really need to model anything if i don't feel like. i can just enjoy the rest of the process as a hobbyist.

i Mean Creating art is supposed to be fun right?

But my main question /concern is how realistic is this approach/mindset for working in 3d industry.(Studios/Freelancing)

i can get away without modeling in 3d industry? if i'm good at other pipeline? or i am required to be effective in modeling assets too?

So my friend told me how important it is to be efficient in the modeling. but now I'm kind of feeling shitty because i know that how bad my modeling is.

So i what are the chances of me landing a job without having much skills in modeling? if it is really important for all other artists in 3d fields then What should i do?

How can i approach this ? how can i improve my modeling skills without feeling frustrated and burnout. How can i learn it in fun way?

    To get better cant be only fun. Its hard work. You have to find the balance to get better. Do a day learning how to model and two days fun modeling.

    I can say i did to much fun sculpting the last 10 years. My skill stuck on the same level.

    if you are trying to do it professionally it is work.

    learning to enjoy work is not the same as having fun. Every day is different. Sometimes you actually need a solid break from work to avoid burnout. Other times you need to suck it up and get over your ephemeral feelings.

    Having these kind of thoughts after only two years probably indicates you are at a point where you know you should get serious but you are anxious about going into the serious zone. If you figure out that anxiety is your main obstacle, it's time to stop thinking and get your hands busy. Work > fear/anxiety.

    If you don't enjoy the modeling portion, why not focus on lighting, rendering, surfacing? There are people who specialize in 3D non-modeling roles.

    Yeah OP, seems like the art creation process may've lost a bit of 'gloss' for you so I'd suggest exploring like Asher commented, other disciplines people attain specialisation in. You'd also alluded too sim/fx work maybe of interest, then might want to check out tech or fx artist roles as well, the former especially are highly sought after, but of course dependant on experience.

    there are dedicated lighting artist, level artist roles where you dont need to model anything. usually bigger studios will have roles like these, especially any studio who makes large open world games. in those cases most of the assets are outsourced and all the world building is done in house.

    for example, during my 5+ years at ubisoft, aside from my time on splinter cell, all my time on Watch dogs and farcry I didnt make a single asset or even open 3ds max for like 4 years.

    and as a lighting artist I was working fulltime in the engine, trying to make other peoples work look as good as possible.

    I also really hate modeling, so I just tailored my skillset to basically phase it out of my daily life, you could do the same. but like others have said, there are still a ton of things to learn and master for any job you go after and there will be large chunks of time where you don't feel motivated or want to do it, just develop the self awareness to be able to determine if it's a short term pain point or something you really just dont enjoy at all.

    Burn out is a self-perception, an interpretation of reality that people make. Remember that many people eventually have that self-perception. If you feel "burned out" change your self-perception. Turn burn out into "burn out" and you are not only still in the race, you increase your odds of winning. The only defeat is that from within.
