I started a new project a while back and I'm getting it done bit by bit. The diorama is based onaj jusay - Fountain of Dog concept.
I was wondering if you guys have any advice and critique what on the current state. I haven't touched the lighting so far as that is gonna be the final step.
I think you've got a bit of a clash of art styles in your work. The dog looks like it should be a bit bigger, and I'm having loads of trouble figuring out the material of the spiral. Look forward to seeing the scene with lighting
What did you mean about the "clash of art styles"?
I made a gif just to make it easier to understand what's happening on the spiral. The material still needs some tweaks but as you can't see the water reflection anywhere else on the stone I figured it's happening in the rock. I might try to make a light function and project it on the rock just to see how that looks like.
I agree and think the concept lends itself to a stylized / hand painted look. I'd go ahead and block in your key and fill lights on a project like this. Lighting is a big driver of composition, form and color. It can be helpful to iterate on it throughout the process rather than thinking about it as an end point in a linear process. I also think the edges could be better defined on the tablet as it reads a bit soft currently.
Can you reduce the speed of everything? It's such a calming scene, but the bush and the water are moving a bit fast. Maybe also add a spotlight for part of the grass to highlight a bit of it?

I made some updates on the scene. Let me know what you think!
I slowed the movements down and I finalised all the lights. I think I'm gonna call it done. https://vimeo.com/340888457
