Physical explanation of material properties?

Hello counters, I read an article from Allegorithmic about PBR and real world lightning, but I am a bit confused and still don't understand. Are there good sources about how real world lightning works and interpolated into PBR?

Especially I am interested in what the differ between all metal and non-metal materials, also ferrous metals and non-ferous metals. How it works, et cetera...

Sebastian legarde wrote the book on this with regard to games. Google him and read.

Beyond that it's basically just physics.
Some materials conduct, others don't, energy is preserved either way...

Another good resource is the documentation on any of the offline renderers. They have been physically-based or 'PBR' for decades - albeit pre-disney BRDF and GGX microfacet reflections(with most now having moved to the metal/rough approach)

The concepts of energy conservation, light bleed/bounce, and dialectic/non-dialectic still transfers over as it's essentially the same principles as the modern Disney shading model.

There's also a Guide to PBR by allegorithmic available as an e-book. That one also for a good job of putting the info into usable context for an artist.
