Maya Tubes/pipes and tessellation, how to achieve optimized results ?

Hi,

I have the curve below, and I want to make a cable from it.



But I'm struggling to have the right amount of geometry at the curves. I can't find a good setting at the extrude tool to so i get less geometry at straight parts and more geometry at curved parts. Is this possible to do in maya ?

My best result is this, and it looks terrible....




Does anyone have any tips from having a nice, smooth and optimized output geo cable/pipes ?
