[ WIP ] Sci - Fi Rifle

Hello guys! I will work on low poly stuffs for a long time which will be used in our game so as a side mission, i started to work on a sci fi gun model to practise other skills. I will update this topic with the progress when i have time to work on this model. Here is the current state of the model.

I think it's a bit early for people to give much feedback. Once you've got most of the rifle sculpted it'll be easier to comment. That being said what you've looks solid, so keep it up.

I don't have experience with zbrush but it's looking good so far. maybe my advice is not to go too much in small details, try to block out all of your model go from big to small, and have 2 different versions so that you can compare them and also get feedback.

@Mohamed_Salah_Bchir yes you are right. I usually do blockout. But this model i just dont want to. I make the model for improve my hard surface skills. I will probably retopo this and bake the maps.

I don't think he needs to do that much blockout because of the concept art, assuming @RawData keeps to the concept's proportions.

Dyou try overlaying your gun over the orthographic provided in the original concept? You can start from there.

@Brian "Panda" Choi I dont want to be exact same with the orthographic view, i generally dont have detailed concepts for models, so i wanted to just eyeball the main image but i dont think current result is bad.

What arguments do you have against matching to orthographic proportions, @RawData?

@Brian "Panda" Choi , do you mean why i didnt use orthographic image to match, I dont need an exact same model with the concept , i just found concept at artstation to practise hard surface modeling, it wont be approved by anybody so i just thought i can eyeball proportions and it would be enough

I made the whole model and now i will merge some parts, dynamesh them, put some rivets, work on some fine details, after all high poly will be finished.

@Brian "Panda" Choi i modeled only left Side of the gun, the other Side is kind a mess. But it is okay. I only want to take some shots. Every angle that looks to left side, normals are like they must be. Baked well

Make the whole thing!

This is a good model, it deserves to be properly finished. The side with the ejection port and bolt handle will be more interesting as well. Are you avoiding it because of lack of reference? Don't let that hold you back. Take some time to fill out the concept yourself -- that's a great skill for an artist to have.

@BIGTIMEMASTER Actually, I am an indie, past couple months i worked like a generalist and i dont have a portfolio yet. Nowadays i am focused on environment art and hard surface models. This one actually will be a portfolio piece. I thought i can take a few shots from same angle of concept and plus a fps camera look. I know when people look your portfolio, they prefer shots rather than sketchfab or marmoset viewer. So i modeled only one side. That way i saved lots of time. 3D art is not the way i make my life, sadly. Also I have a game that i work on. So I dont have a chance to lose any second.
