What software do you currently use? Asking what DCC to learn for real-time vegatation creation specifically is like asking what brand of guitar to get to learn Stairway to Heaven.......
Or are you asking about a specialist software like Speedtree? Try to be a bit more helpful in posting threads like this. Otherwise we won't take you seriously.
I would not recomend speedtree if he doesnt know how are these even made. Let him make some vegetation to understand it and then he can subscribe on speedtree.
In vegetation you generally model the branches, and the leaves are 1plane each with maybe a few subdivisions (basically called cards) that uses a leaf picture and an opacity mask to cut the area outside the leaf. Grass can be made out of tapered splines and generally these two methods are mostly used for making vegetation.
Most games don't use tapered splines for grass, that's too expensive, too many vertices (memory cost) and the triangles are too long and thin (rendering cost).

At least with Speedtree you are able to open an example tree, and see the raw meshes and textures that went into its creation, doing some backwards engineering. To me thats way easier to learn what components are necessary, if not easier than starting from an empty scene and stumbling through older methods. Speedtree still requires that you make all the raw elements in order to create the foliage.

See the wiki for game grass methods. Most often, grass is made using planes.
