what do you use to handpaint your textures?

good ol' photoshop, or something else like zbrush polypaint or substance painter? Or a combination?

I'm kind of on the fence about getting substance for this purpose, but I'd like to hear what you guys do. I've heard substance painter is kind of misleading for this purpose, but those posts were like 2 or 3 years old.

One of my dreams is to handpaint using actual paint. I did something like this in 2014, where I printed out my UV maps, filled them in by hand, then rescanned it onto my computer. Only problem was it was expensive. I only had my leftover acrylics and gauche paint from college, and they were pretty limited.

But the results were so worth it. I've since been using Photoshop to simulate the effect until I can afford to do it the traditional way again.

Blender and krita for me (the poor man's tools) though 3D coat is generally the industry go-to for hand-painting textures. Substance I actually would not recommend for hand-painting textures, it's really for generating realistic textures

Paint tool sai for me for "pure drawing" only, photoshop for more textured brushes and details
