3ds max edge selection only selectig middles ! Help please !!

Hello !
I'm having this problem on 3ds max, the edge selection wont let me select edges by themselves ! only by groups ! like this!
i cant select any edge unless i select a group of 4 that are connected ! please help this is kinda of urgent !
