I really want to make something for this contest. My first idea is to make a pattern finish as it is an underused style. Because of the mid rarity and big flat surface AWP is great choice for my skin. Spray-paint style tiles really well but Anodized Multicolor has that great specular effect:

My idea is to create a pattern of cool robot faces, first quick and dirty test:

I can see the design is to complex, contrast too strong and there is too much negative space. In order to test things quickly I'm coping my one head many times, in the finished skin all the heads will be different:

And that's where I'm at now.

The tiling shouldn't be an issue when you use a spray paint finish. It will get projected onto the model.

Those heads looks cool, maybe you can combine many of them into one pattern?

EMKAY Ive already tried that in the first post, without the shine it looks bland and more like a pattern on a pijama

Great job in capturing the era in your designs, they look really period-accurate.
The one in the top left of the sepia toned image looks like a robotic cenobite. Very cool.

I would love to use the Space Core from Portal but I don't want to risk breaking any rules.

Considering your last in-game preview I would likely scale the pattern down a bit, so a bit less heads are being cut and non-readable due to it. It might also look great with super small size, like 1/3 of current, try it out and show as how would it look.

K_A_S_I I scalled the patter donw a bit, but i wanted it to be still readable when you are holding the gun
