Objects disappear when performing boolean difference?

Whenever I do a Boolean difference, both my objects disappear. I am doing this in Maya 2014. Normally I'd just give up and multi-cut the details I need but that takes more time than it saves. Especially since this error happens all the time. Here is what I have done to resolve this.

>Mesh cleanup with non-manifold and 5 sided faces on turned.
>unlocked normals
>made sure normals face the right way
>combined everything with another object to strip it of all the residual "crap" data.
>exported as an OBJ
>exited+restarted Maya fresh
>imported OBJ into a new scene
>changed both of the material to a new one (can't hurt right)

Isolated the problem down to the hard surface shape (i think...).
>booleaned both notches with a random sphere. Works just fine.
>attempted to Boolean the sphere with the hard surface shape. Both objects disappear

Here is the file in an FBX format if anyone wants to take a crack at it. I'm trying to dig those 2 grey notch looking things into the hard surface shape.
