Handling master materials and material functions for a modular environment?!

Hi everyone! I'm looking to start another environment but I want to be smarter about how I plan my materials instead of just making unique materials for each mesh. I'm going to be making a modular scifi biodome and would like to be guided in the right direction as far as materials and material functions go for a modular sci fi environment. I want to have the nice softly baked edges and normals for each mesh but would also like to use a tiling metal/scifi base texture on a lot of things kind of like a baked normal/detail normal set up. Could anyone break it down for me?
