[Challenge] Larger than life

At the suggestion of @KielFiggins, this challenge will be Larger than life. 1 rule. Make it big. The biggest you`ve animated. Whether it be a cave troll, or a city destroying robot. The bigger, the better! Thanks for the suggestion, Kiel.

Hey guys, here are some super rough initial frames. Didn't want to go to far in storyboards since the technical issues like camera lens and character scale play such a huge part on something this size.

Thanks guys, glad you like it. Still feeling things out. The 2.35 aspect ratio makes for a wide letterbox, compared to the tall letterbox of the original concept. From this, I'll likely be changing the Demon to be more of a Kraken. Something with a wider frame that will really fill the screen.

@_adamturnbull I'm using Mecha Nurse and Lacerian Beast ( http://3dfiggins.com/Store/ )

Will probably swap her red crosses for gold to play up the Angel vs Demon theme. And will likely swap out Lacerian for a squid type character that I'll do a proxy model for one tentacle, rig that and ref it in however many times I'll need.

@EVernier Ha, seems we all had something similar in mind. Doesn't mean you can mix it up and make it your own. What if the character was parkoring along the side of a wall and the dragon was flying up past it? Or instead of landing on the dragon's back, he grabbed on to a horn on the side of the head, twisting the head down causing the whole beast to dip and change direction unwillingly?

Just some ideas, excited to see the following shots.

Thanks for the suggestions. She's going to plant her sword in the dragon's neck then jump on top and kill it. I think it's gonna be a good exercise for weight and balance, if I can make it look good.

Worked a bit on shot 01 and did some quick work on shot 02. Gotta work on the transition and I think the dragon comes in way too fast in shot 01. I'll work more on it today.

Ok, Im going BIG. Not only the biggest characters Ive animated, but the most complex shot I've ever done. 3 character. humanoid / creature / mech. All done by Kiel.

Ive done a first pass story board just to get my thoughts done. This will by no means be finished any time soon, but that's ok!

1 - character walks up to what appears to be rocks

2 - rocks stands up and becomes massive creature

3- character turns and runs like hell

4- character trips, or creature swipes and knocks the guy down. probably the latter

5- character taps something on his wrist in a last ditch effort for survival

6- mechanical drone drops from the sky, landing over top of the character in a protective form

7- mechanical drone tears the creature apart with it's weaponry.

Biting off more than I can chew? Probably. But I`m ready for the challenge!

Impressive @slipsius ! I'm flattered. Be sure you're referencing in those rigs, as I'll be updating them (spider mech piston fix, yellow dude extra foot controls, adding a tongue in beast) here shortly for more controls and some tech issues. Also, if you hit any issues, email me and let me know.

Also, if you want, I have tool to kick out bullet casings and animation debris. So if you see the mech's gun spitting out shells, let me know and I'll send it over.

And, what the hell. Might as well start learning some particle FX. Clearly this needs improvements. a shock wave of dust could be very cool, I think. This test isnt using any actual textures. just the default shader stuff. so ya. Terrible.

Great suggestion Kiel. Here I have a previz of a seq I am working on. At the moment, I am focusing on the camera and the flow of the whole seq. I still have the last part where our Hero runs up the Giant's arm and punches him in the face to block out. All feedback are welcome, as I am still learning about camera and edits.

Will be swapping out the Giant Norman rig with Kiels Decepticon rig later as I progress with this project.

Here's my new framing. Swapped out the demon for a squid. I like the way it fills the frame more. Still need to block in my boards, so more to come.

Nice work @alexteoh ! Really digging the new camera work and the punch through the rock is a great moment. My only note would be giving a bit more hang time in the final shot at the top of his arc and then speeding up the spin down. Right not that shot feel like 3 equally timed beats.

@alexteoh I like the camera angles, but in general I get the sense that several shots start a bit too early, causing slight lag and discontinuity.

Initial shot giant's right arm appears to grab the ledge, next shot it is lowered.
When the giant is rising and you get the shot from behind; example of discontinuity since it feels like he stood up more in the previous shot.
There are similar minor discontinuities, but overall they don't break anything and I still think there's a good flow.

Hope I'm making sense.

Is it worth starting a new challenge now and if people want to keep submitting to this one thats fine. I didn't get chance to do much on this one but it would be good to start a new theme to get the creative juices flowing again.

Here is my cameras and idea , Maybe i will just skip 2 scenes. Maybe just jump from the spawn of the monster to the guys running from it. I didn't have the time to participate sooner because I'm hunting for a job but I think that I need to do some challenge while I keep searching :P.

I don't know if anyone have suggested a theme already but I am currently playing overwatch and I love the animations of it. Maybe we could do something like the victory animations they have for each characters like this one min 3:10 :
