Assuming the blue box is my marquee selection

I want this to be the result of my selection.

I'm not looking for alternative ways of getting the selection, I'm looking for a way to adjust the marquee selection tool.

I don't think the marquee selection tool has that capability by default, but the lasso tool does. Make sure the component selection option is set to "fast". I guess that's an alternative but it might be as close as you can get.
