what are some techniques to get the crescent shaped part of the hilt in this image if I am using 3ds Max?

sorry for late post. I am trying to use splines to get the shape and maybe move the verts to where they are needed. I use the same technique with the wing part. It just does seem to work the same here.

I will look up subdivision surface modeling ,but a lot of the links on that page does not work. Also one of those sites is infected too.
