Mr. Moose already gave you a helpful link to some general information, so here is my smart ass answer: Good communication skills are quite important as a freelancer. Looking at a situation from someone else's perspective is a part of that. So do you think your question is clear enough and what additional information might people need to answer it?

Best way to go compared to what? It's not any easier than a studio job, if that's what you mean.

Freelancing isn't for everyone either.

its really not that clear. "the best way to go" depends a lot on your skill level, how many contacts you have, the job prospects in your area, your willingness to move for a career, your job history, your goals etc.

Try to fill in some of these blanks and clarify your situation and your goals, and maybe you'll get more help that way.

You're going to have a really tough time trying to be a freelancer if your folio is hard to find.

For someone that has no folio online, no its not a good idea to be a freelancer. You need to be able to show prospective clients you can do what they want by showing them you have already done it. You need to have a good business network or at least a couple of spectacular contacts.

Here is a good read http://www.edharriss.com/getajob/about.htm. The book is a little dated but it still rings true. The only thing that is missing is the impact 'low cost' countries have had on commissions for freelancers and studios and jobs for salary seekers.

I have one question, I plan to make my art portfolio with things from this year, do I risk anything if I show them on web? I will have any copyright rights or how do I protect my stuff to don't get stolen?

Just watermark all of your pictures, but even if you do it will always be difficult to prevent anyone from stealing your images, but in most cases it's not something you have to worry about.

are you talking about textures? or rendered commercial images? If it's just a presentation of game meshes, I don't see any need to be worried, some people like to watermark their textures though, I usually don't do that but instead try to stay away from uploading high resolution textures
