Stylized Gun design

Hi everyone,

I am designing this stylized gun and doing the textures hand painted. Let me know what you think..

Did a quick rough sculpt in ZB and went on to texturing. It is in an early stage but this is what I got so far:

Some of the shapes are pretty soft and feel organic rather than a hard surface. You may want to get your shapes and bevels how you want them first using control loops, etc. and then do a sculpting pass. You will get better and cleaner results that way.

Tobbo thanks for the comment.. You are right but I actually just did the sculpt to get the basic shapes for retopo. I am not even getting ao or normal maps out of it. But I get your point.. it looks bumpy.

Dragonar I did most of the textures in 3DCoat. Used Photoshop for final adustments

Really cool design and texturing. I would maybe think about lightening up something on the gun though. If you look at the values everything looks very flat. I did some photoshop magic to show what I mean. I jut lightened up the metal parts to give the value range a little boost which I feel gives it a little more interest. I might be completely wrong but just thought I would throw this out there. But again awesome job!

How did you come up with such an idea? It seems like a dead horny fish on a gun!

noosence thanks a lot for the comment. It is very helpful..In fact I went ahead and made some slight changes.. I made the metals a bit brghter but ust very subtly because I don't want the attention to go straight to the metals.

Looking lovely. I like the way you painted the bone material. The metal on the left tusk doesn't read as well as the rest of it, though.

Its colors sort of blend in with the bone, so it may be a good idea to give it a little hue shift so that it matches with the metal on the rest of the gun.

nice execution. i have some issues w the design but its too late for that. Instead I wanted to point out some concerns about colors. The red strap around the hilt attracts my eye way too much. Of all the parts, the ribbon should be last in line to attract the eye. Same goes with the foregrip (furthermore, I have no idea what that furnace-vent-looking detail is supposed to be). I'd suggest toning down the saturation at least. If you want red somewhere, I'd suggest adding some war paint to the skull instead. That is a much better focal point. The purple looks out of place too. I'd suggest leaving that area the metal color or perhaps a brighter metal.

.nL thanks, glad you like it. I made the metal on the tusk more of a brownish value as opposed to the axe-thing which is more blue-ish. I will play around with the hue a little.

Polygoblin thanks for the comment. I just realised how the ribbon catches the eye after I played with the contrast and layers to pop the whole thing more. I will reduce the saturation and add some more detail to the textures and post again.

I think David was referring to the fact that someone might steal the idea for this design, remodel it and then try and sell it for profit as a dota 2 weapon.
