strange black texture artifact

No matter what project I open up in Substance Painter, be it a project of my own or a provided sample like the one below I keep getting this strange artifact when painting that actually affects the texture itself. Not sure how or why it's happening but it's pretty frustrating. Do I have to have special settings to use this software?
