Hi there polycounters !

Here's my problem, I've been looking for a LOD generator software around the forum without success.
I know there's a free software with a black interface, I recall having seen it. Would a savior rise among you and give me the name of it ?

sorry to hijack IFraude, but on a related note, does anyone have any info on how to dynamically switchout LODs based on distance in MAYA. I know the games engines handle this, but i'm wondering how to replicate in maya

IFraude, you might be best off seeing where decimation (zbrush) or reduce (maya) get you. should be okay for mid LOD. For lo LOD, i'd literally use positioned spheres, pryramids, and cubes. I don't know of a way to automate it, but would expect you would be best doing it manually, so you don't break the silhouette.

I believe your looking for https://www.simplygon.com/ Free for a certain amount of server time, but check the license depending on what you want to do with the lods

What you are looking for are LOD groups. Edit -> Level of Detail -> Group

Simplygon is amazing tho the best features (proxy lods, level editor integration) are damn expensive and you have to rely on your company to purchase a license.

I thought about this and an idea struck me. What if you used the UE4 mesh collision generator thing to create LODs, might be worth a try.

That dosnt actually reduce polys it creates a convex hull with a similar shape, and only creates convex shapes

So wait, you have to upload the model to a cloud and then its optimized? Seems highly inefficient (and pricy).

What about Modo's Reduction tool? Keeps form while reducing mesh resolution, preserves UVs. Probably not nearly as "magical" as Simply polygon but at the very least its a lot cheaper and doesnt rely on a cloud.

$10 a month (or perpetual $299) if you go with Modo Indie on steam, Indie limitation is 100k poly export but that shouldnt be a problem for your use.

not in a professional environment, there you have license and just mass run everything through it
