What does this mask do?

Can someone give me a brief explanation as to what this kind of mask does?

It's in the SciFiHallway map that comes free with the editor.

I understand he's using a master material template, but the squares on the masks kind of have me confused.

The squares are probably the AO, which is in the Alpha channel.

The alpha is completely white.

That texture with the squares you see is just a placeholder texture, there's a second rgba mask that's plugged into the Diffuse slot as the place holder.

I kinda figured that's what it was doing.

Couldn't he have just put any kind of texture in there?
