Help! I suck at greebles!

I'm trying to put a lot of mechanical detail on the back of a spaceship I'm making cause I want some of the engine's inner workings to be exposed, but I really have no clue what I'm doing. I'd appreciate if someone could nudge me in the right direction by giving some pointers or maybe even some good examples for me to look at. This is driving me insane.
