Question about 3D Coat

Is anyone currently using 3D Coat here? If so, how do you like it?? I'm curious to try it out, mostly as a 3D texturing package... But it can also do some nifty modeling stuff as well.
Opinions / Reviews of it would be appreciated!

I've only used it for texturing, it's pretty amazing so far. There's a demo out there, I did a 3 way shootout between Mudbox, 3DCoat and Blender before I chose 3DCoat.

It's amazing for 3d texture painting. Not a huge fan of sculpting in it. The retopo stuff is pretty great too.

I use it for consistent retopology and texture painting for handpainted assets. Substance Painter I can't get to work for handpainted textures. The masking system is lacking in my opinion, for 3Dcoat.

Love it for texture painting, and have learned to like it ok for sculpting. Retopo and UV tools are pretty nice as well!

I use it for texture painting and retopo.

(But PS CC is getting there with texture painting...)

Rock solid for Retopo work. Unwrap tools are great too. I also use it for baking displacement maps.

In terms of texture painting, I find the results to be a bit powdery which is cool for certain projects. Also there is a disconnect between how textures look in 3D Coat vs main 3D app. New PBR features will fix that but its still early in development.

I would take a look at Substance Painter & Marie Indie if texture painting is your main motivation.

Now if I'm not planning to go over 4k textures, is Mari still worth it?

I really like the direction that Substance Painter is going in, those guys/gals are dev'ing like crazy.

I don't think that Marie Indie is worth it considering how much other applications in the same price range offer. - but this horse has been beaten to death already :poly124: = http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2236553

Its good to have options though.

Best software for retop, UV unwrap, texture painting.
No time to try voxel sculpting, probably also very good.

Has the viewport rotation been sped up now? Haven't tried 3D painting in PS for ages as it was pretty laggy for me before, but would like to know if this is a viable option for texturing now.

Wow! That's some positive praise for 3D coat! My worry is investing in a program, and then it suddenly becoming non-relevant. There are so many different programs out now, and I'd like to narrow down and focus on just a few.
I've never heard of Mari before, but its Weta, and those guys are awesome.

Have any of you played with the PBR stuff in 3D Coat?

3d coat is really fast learning software so it wont take you much time learning it. If you know the basic principles of games art making, you will be able to use the app almost straight away.

ahtiandr, that's good to know! I'm looking to streamline a process for creating art at home. I've been a world builder for the past 5 years now, and I miss asset creation. Anything that is intuitive will be a big help. Thanks!

I use it every day for texturing low poly, stylized characters.It's so clean and easy to use with photoshop.
