Maya 2015 Skin Weight problem

Hello. I am having the problem that when I select my mesh and the paint skin weights my mesh does not appear black and wight or with a gradient of colors, displaying which parts are weighted to which joins. Instead it appears grey as normal. :( I tried changing the renderer to viewport 2.0. and turning off the "use default material" option. I also tried resetting the tool, restarting maya, deleting the preferences and updating my video card drivers. Nothing changed. Please help, if someone can.

-Have you double checked, whether a skincluster is actually applied to the mesh?
-Is there an influence (joint) selected in the tool settings of the skinweighting tool for painting?
-In the tool settings, is the Paint mode selected (and not the select mode) ?

I have had this same problem with an assignment mesh for university. Try changing the renderer, so if you are using Legacy Default Viewport, switch to Viewport 2.0.
