Gradient Map baking issue Maya

Hi guys,
I've been trying to bake a gradient map in Maya 2014 and I'm getting really weird results... I'm not sure what the problem is.. So I'm hoping someone has ran into this issue and has a solution.

Hi guy,
Make sure your Target Mesh and Source Mesh have the (exact) same position before transfering maps. A good routine is checking your target meshs cage, or envelope, which you can turn on under Display in Transfer Maps (I usually set it to 'Both'). Make sure your Source Mesh is inside the Target Mesh cage (red blobby mesh), as it is from there it projects or gather the maps, and you're good to go.

why even use transfer maps for something simple as that....
just create a ramp as planar projection in a surface shader and batch bake mental ray as light and color. done. no need for duplicating meshes, creating extra uvs for the texture..

If you work more with modeling and less with shaders and rendering the workflow OP posted is easier to grasp and thus quicker, atleast for me. Not saying you shouldn't step outside your comfort zone, but for me your method would require diving into a whole other level of Maya than your used to (i.e. how does one create a ramp as planar projection??). Can't answer for OP, though.
