Zbrush: Mask not working - indenting into mesh

When I go to use the mask tools it looks like I've used the layer brush on it rather than the traditional grey colouring. Technically it still functions as a mask but I'd like the grey masking back. Any help would be appreciated!

You're using one of the bump preview materials. They turn black polypaint (or in this case, the black from the masking) into a bump effect.
