Advice needed on building a hard surface shape!

I'm building up my hard surface/prop modeling chops and I was wondering the best way to go about creating this spiraled handle? I've tried to build it from a helix with splines and also tried starting with a basic cube but i cant seem to nail it. Any suggestions on how you all would attack this?

Why are you using helices? i think it looks like a cylinder with extrudes is all

because the geo flows like a helix. It only ends at the top and bottom, never in the middle. Like a spring or coil.

It doesn't look like a helix to me, and if it is a slightly off kilter divided up cylinder would give the same effect. We spend too long making things that the player wouldn't notice. If it LOOKS right it IS right!

You can do it the way you can create every helix:

Either way nobody would notice if it's helix, or not.
