Hand Painted Texture Practice

I have been trying to improve on my hand painted textures. I decide to make a thread to get some feedback on my progress. Here is the first one I started working on. Any comments or suggestion would be much appreciated. I really want to get better at this.

My only suggestions would be to add some more of a darker value along the edges of your highlights to suggest the core shadow. Another layer for the spec on the edges might give it another boost. Come in a little hotter and tighter and focus on creating shapes with it that the define the form of the edge wear similar to the chipped areas. I might also suggest trying to bring down the highlights on the chips. Think they might work better if they were a little more subtle over all.

I am using the top row to break up areas of the floor. Not sure if this was the best way to do that or not.
But then again, it really depends on what you're going for. Keep working at it!
Do you actually zoom in to 200% or 300% while painting 512x512 texture?
That explains how you are able to make edges look so crisp in some places, each single time I approach hand painting I'd stick to normal zoom because I thought zooming in like this was evil or something, but I guess I'll have to try this myself, although I don't get the comfort of the second screen so two windows should do it for me.
Generally working at 100% (native res) is good for making big sweeping changes/details, then zooming in for pushing subtle details. Constantly zoom out to about the size the player would be viewing the texture at to see if it reads well. I generally try not to stay zoomed in to one spot for too long or else I get stuck and waste a lot of time.
I really suggest you get two monitors, it frees your soul :P
this will pop out a duplicate window of what you are working on so you can see it at full rez while you paint zoomed in.
Clean up those brush strokes so it's not so soft looking and hit those cracks/spaces with a little heavier contrast to really make this pop.:thumbup:

The floor pattern came out really nice as well. I like the chips along the edges. I think they read really well. Personally it's a little monochromatic in the shadows/occlusion between each brick but that's just personal preference. Normally I use a complimentary color in the deep spots for AO/Shading.
I mention that because I like it on the roof tiles. My only crit for the Tiles is that they're very flat. I'm pretty sure you should could pop the volume a little higher by pushing your contrast on the high and low points of the tile.
Lastly for the tiling wall. It's a nice start but the colors are hitting a muddy, almost evenly dirty feel. I would try to make a second pass at it and try to keep that towards points that would make contact with another surface. IE floor, ceiling, etc. Finish up the metal braces also! Don't forget to hit it with some bounce lighting from the wall
For example your tiles look great from straight on, but they look inverted when viewed at angle.
