Color theory as it comes to character concepts

So I guess that the question that I’m really curios about is, something that dives deep in to everyone’s technique when it applies to their characters. My question is just figuring out the right colors to use on a model. It’s a very questionable thing, just throwing on a different color scheme can make any model look so much better. Yet I want to be able to figure out the right colors from the start. Any Suggestions on a good approach to figuring out the right basic colors to a model.
